UNTAMED LUXURY
”VARANGER LODGE IS AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TRIUMPH OF LOCAL BUILDING TRADITION AND MODERN DESIGN.”
Far up in northeastern Norway, in the Finnmark region, lies Nesseby, a small fishing village by the ruggedly beautiful Varanger fjord. Life in Nesseby begins and ends with the sea, the source of livelihood for thousands of years.
Right by the water’s edge, a stone’s throw from Nesseby harbour, Varanger Lodge is a window to life in the arctic outpost. Completed in 2017, the lodge is the brainchild of Edgar Olsen, a professional fisherman born and raised in Varanger, who wanted to offer guests authentic experiences in his homestead.
Genuine, sustainable and challenging – these themes were the building blocks of Edgar’s vision for high-quality accommodation in Varanger. His Finnish friend, architect Konsta Lehti saw it important to stay true to the vision, but create architecture for the 21st century.
The outcome is an environmentally friendly triumph of local building tradition and modern design. The shapes of the two lodges are directly influenced by the surrounding landscape, namely the mountains above nearby Mortensnes cultural heritage site clearly visible east of Varanger Lodge.
BUILT WITH NATURAL MATERIALS
Inspired by the gamme, an ancient Sámi dwelling with sod roof, Varanger Lodge is built with natural materials. The roofs are covered with sod from the building site.
The outer walls are treated with iron sulfate, a sustainable substance that gives wood grey tones that vary with the weather and seasons.
Inside, parts of the walls are panelled with birch boards, each piece picked and sawed by hand to fit the lodges.
The gamme traditionally has a smoke hole in the ceiling – at Varanger Lodge, the bedrooms have skylights that allow natural light in during the day and provide a view of the Northern Lights when lying in bed at night.
There is no TV or Wi-Fi at Varanger Lodge. They are distractions of the busy world somewhere far away. The window walls in the living rooms keep the soothing main attraction – the sea and nature of Varanger fjord – present at all times during your stay.
